Who was the first African American student to enroll in Bridgewater College?

Answer

Lessie V. Miller was accepted for admission, but did not enroll, in 1953. Karen C. Weaver Scott enrolled in 1954 and graduated in 1956. An African American man, William T. Jenkins, was also admitted in 1954, but he withdrew before graduation.

Carlyle Whitelow, Class of 1959, was the first Black student to enroll as a freshman and complete all four years of study at Bridgewater College. He lettered two years in football, basketball and track and was the first Black athlete to participate in intercollegiate athletics at the College. He was also the first Black athlete in Virginia to play at a non-predominantly Black college.
